Direct-fit pitman arm for 1966-1971 Ford and Mercury cars and light trucks. This replacement steering arm connects the steering gearbox to the center link, translating rotary input into lateral motion to steer the vehicle. Built to restore worn or damaged steering linkage, it provides reliable alignment, reduced play, and long service life. Designed for restoration and maintenance projects, the part is durable, corrosion-resistant, and engineered for straightforward installation to get classic vehicles back on the road with confident steering response.
Features:
- Fits 1966-1971 Ford and Mercury models (direct replacement for factory pitman arm).
- Heavy-duty forged steel construction for strength and long-lasting durability.
- Restores steering linkage function by reducing play and ensuring proper alignment.
- Corrosion-resistant finish to withstand road conditions and aging restoration builds.
- Direct-fit design for straightforward installation; ideal for restoration or maintenance.
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 3/5
- Estimated time: 60-120 minutes
Instructions:
- Park on a level surface, set parking brake, and disconnect negative battery cable for safety.
- Raise and securely support the vehicle if necessary to access the steering box and center link.
- Inspect and mark the relationship between the pitman arm and the steering box sector shaft with a scribe or marker to preserve alignment.
- Apply penetrating oil to the pitman arm nut and at the splines; allow it to soak for several minutes.
- Remove the castle nut or retaining fastener on the pitman arm using the appropriate socket and breaker bar.
- Use a pitman arm puller to separate the arm from the steering box sector shaft. Do not strike the arm off with a hammer as this can damage the steering box.
- Clean the splines on the sector shaft and check for wear or damage. Remove any burrs or corrosion with a wire brush or file.
- Position the new pitman arm on the splines, aligning it to the previously marked position. If no mark was made, align per the OEM steering geometry or service manual instructions.
- Install and hand-tighten the retaining nut, then torque to the factory specification listed in the vehicle service manual. If a cotter pin/castle nut is used, install a new cotter pin.
- Reattach the center link and any drag link connections, ensuring ball joints are seated and retaining clips are secured.
- Lower the vehicle (if raised), reconnect the battery, and perform a steering check. Have a professional alignment performed if necessary to ensure proper toe and handling.
