Instructions:
- Park vehicle on a level surface, engage parking brake, and secure with wheel chocks.
- Raise the front of the vehicle and support with jack stands; remove the front wheel on the side you are servicing.
- Loosen the jam nut securing the outer tie rod to the inner tie rod (do not remove yet).
- Count and record the number of turns or measure the length of the exposed thread on the outer tie rod to preserve alignment on reassembly.
- Remove the cotter pin and unbolt the castle nut (if equipped) securing the outer tie rod end to the steering knuckle; separate the outer tie rod from the knuckle using a tie rod removal tool or pickle fork.
- Unscrew the outer tie rod from the inner tie rod and back off the jam nut to free the inner tie rod.
- Access the inner tie rod at the steering rack; remove any retaining clamps or boots that secure it. Use a suitable inner tie rod tool or wrench to unscrew and remove the inner tie rod from the rack.
- Compare the new inner tie rod to the old part to confirm correct orientation and thread pitch.
- Install the new inner tie rod by threading it onto the rack to the original position; tighten to the manufacturer's torque specification.
- Reinstall the steering rack boot and any retaining clamps; ensure the boot is seated to prevent contamination.
- Reattach the outer tie rod to the inner tie rod using the previously recorded turn count or thread measurement to maintain approximate alignment; tighten the jam nut.
- Reconnect the outer tie rod end to the steering knuckle and torque the nut to specification; insert a new cotter pin if applicable.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque the wheel lug nuts to specification.
- Have a professional wheel alignment performed to restore precise steering geometry and toe settings.
